Draughtsman Civil

Draftsmen draw technical drawings and plans that are used by production and construction workers to build buildings such as buildings, roads, bridges and other structures in the construction industry.

What are the jobs and responsibilities of a Draughtsman (Civil)?

  • They work in an office environment where they use computer software to calculate and create designs.

  • They communicate with engineers and other technical personnel and work with design and manufacturing teams throughout the design process. This work also requires proximity to the construction site, where the draftsmen pay attention to the geographical conditions of the area.

  • Others also use maps and plan to determine the feasibility of a building or object, and the draftsmen themselves are responsible for translating the ideas of others into what is depicted on a particular map. Although it is common nowadays to use computer-aided design software (CAD), this has been done for many years.

  • A draftsman often works long hours, although overtime may be required due to deadlines. Most jobs are filled by journeys to the construction site, which may be necessary, but not always.

  • It is also important to have a background in commercial or industrial design. They can offer the appropriate training and references a draughtsman needs, as well as any relevant experience in this field.

  • Patience is essential, as many drafts, revisions and amendments need to be completed before a plan is approved. Successful candidates have the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with a variety of disciplines such as engineers, designers, and architects.
