• Environmental science emerged from the fields of natural history and medicine during the Enlightenment period. It is an interdisciplinary academic field that combines physical, biological and informative sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geography, economics, sociology and social sciences with environmental research and solutions to environmental problems.

What are the jobs and responsibilities of Environmental Scientists?

• Environmental scientists are usually employed by government agencies or consultants to conduct research on environmental issues, usually within the scope of their professional responsibilities.

• They strive to develop, implement and enforce state, local and federal environmental protection and conservation regulations. They must have great written and verbal communication skills and be able to speak well in public to share their findings with colleagues, bosses and the public.

• They must be able to work as part of a research team and potentially become group leaders. Math and accounting skills may be necessary to manage departmental budgets and manage research projects.

• Field research is a very typical position, and one example of such a task would be the collection of soil samples and soil protocols. Experience as a scientific assistant or laboratory assistant is an advantage if you get an entry-level job as an environmental scientist.

• Many have a strong sense of responsibility for their colleagues and the environment, as well as for the public.

• They usually work during normal business hours, but some may require longer laboratory hours. Entry-level workers generally do more fieldwork than older workers, and environmental scientists are generally more involved in research and development than their peers in other fields of science.
