What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is a field of medicine that deals with skin, nails, hair and their diseases. The dermatologist answers these questions.

Dermatology is almost always an outpatient function. Dermatologists usually work in clinics or in private practice. But, dermatologists sometimes look after hospitalized patients or conduct ad hoc examinations.

Certified dermatologists spend time in outpatient clinics or perform appropriate operations.

What Does A Dermatologist Do?

In some parts of the world, such as Australia, dermatologists spend most of their time treating diseases resulting from sun exposure, such as malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

• In other regions, dermatologists are more likely to experience cosmetic problems: birthmarks, hair and nail diseases, occupational dermatitis, psoriasis, skin infections, eczema, acne, rosacea, and hand dermatitis.

• Cosmetic problems that dermatologists can help with include wrinkles, age spots and other signs of ageing, hair loss and scars.

• Some dermatologists perform minor cosmetic procedures such as face lifting, liposuction and eyelid surgery, surgical eyelid modification.

• Document all patient data and interactions. Prescribe medications, interventions, and behavioural changes to alleviate or eliminate symptoms.

• Perform procedures such as removal of lesions, laser treatment and biopsies. Interview and examine patients to identify, rule out, or diagnose conditions.

• Consult patients, diagnose and change the patient's electronic record.

• Skin transplants and patches of skin: Dermatologists can repair missing skin with skin from a different place in the body. The skin is transplanted from a free piece of tissue or a skin patch near the skin loss site.

• Warts: These are contagious, benign skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of skin. Warts may indicate an underlying issue, but they often resolve without treatment. A dermatologist can use a variety of treatments to remove persistent warts.

People should contact a dermatologist as soon as possible if signs of skin disease appear or if current therapy is ineffective.

How To Become A Dermatologist?

Dermatology is just another vertical of medical sciences and thus requires a credible background in science. You need to have a medical degree (MBBS).

The aim of the course is to enable students to deal with all aspects of dermatopathology. This includes the microscopic diagnosis of skin cancers and inflammatory diseases. Students take part in lectures and conferences on dermatopathology and clinical dermatology. This includes clinical-pathological relations.

But, in pre-clinical years, dermatology is an overlooked aspect of medical school curricula. Medical faculties should provide students with an appropriate dermatology program. Academic dermatologists and other staff play a key role in educating future doctors. They must develop creative ways to engage preclinical students.
