Sericulture

  • The word "silk" sounds so luxurious and classic, but the brilliance and elegance of silk are so great that it cannot be compared to any other fabric. The demand for sericulture is still active today, as the desire for silk dresses continues, especially in the modern world.

  • Sericulture means the cultivation of silk by raising silkworms, and the technique involves growing on a plant and producing yarn. Animal fibres are produced naturally and are considered the queen of textiles, and they are naturally produced by the animals themselves.

  • Silk is thought to have been produced in China as early as the Neolithic Age, but recent evidence suggests it circulated more than 2,000 years earlier. China and India were the two main producers, accounting for more than 80% of world silk production in the late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages. In China, India, South Asia and Europe as well as in Africa, sericulture developed into an important domestic industry in the Middle Ages.
