Naval Architecture Engineering

What is Naval Architecture Engineering?

  • The course in Naval Architecture primarily relates to the design, construction or maintenance of all types of marine vessels such as ships, boats, oil and gas tankers, containers, passenger ships, ferries, etc.

  • One of the main tasks of the naval architect is to actively ensure that the design and analysis of all types of flotation systems are maintained. This may include ensuring that the entire marine architecture, ship structure, and design are as cost-effective as possible.

  • A ship architect is also responsible for the maintenance and training of all waterborne vehicles. You must also be able to analyze problems that arise and develop a plan to fix them, and adjust these plans as needed.

  • Ship architects work with companies that deal with boats and other sea voyages, such as cruise and shipping companies. They usually work all day indoors and outdoors.

What does a Naval Architecture Engineer do?

  • Integrating his/her activities and ultimately taking responsibility for the overall project. In addition to this important leadership role, the marine architect also has a special function to ensure that a safe, economical and seaworthy design is produced.

  • The ship's architect, due to his complex engineering skills, is a professional who combines the contributions of a mechanical engineer, electrical and electronics engineer, materials engineer, and other disciplines to properly apply them in ship design.

However, a ship engineer is someone who specializes in the operation and maintenance of all engineering systems used on a ship.

  • Develop and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and draw conclusions based on technical assessments. Apply probability and statistical methods to maritime architecture and maritime engineering problems. Familiarize yourself with the appropriate instruments for maritime architecture and technology.

  • Design ships and structures and monitor their construction. Maintain and develop knowledge of marine standards and methods of marine architecture. Work with stakeholders and translate performance requests into design specifications. Prototype and review performance metrics to ensure that all interior, exterior, and structural details meet standards.

What are the eligibility and admission criteria?

  • To pursue an Undergraduate (UG) engineering degree, you should have passed 10+2 in the science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) from a recognized board.

  • To get into top engineering colleges such as IITs and NITs, you need to appear for JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and full the required eligibility criteria (performance in the class 12/equivalent qualifying Examination and the Joint Entrance Examination).

  • Independent entrance tests are also held by the various state, central, and private universities which mostly require 50% as the prerequisite to appear for the test. (minimum percentage may vary in case of reserved and girl candidate and college requirement.)

What are the skills required?

  • Sound knowledge of mathematics

  • Analytical thinking

  • Pay attention to details

  • Passion for machines

  • Naval Engineering

  • Engineering Design

  • Autodesk AutoCAD
