Mechatronics Engineer

Who is a Mechatronics Engineer?

Mechatronics is known as the integration of electronics into mechanisms. Mechatronics engineers are in charge of formulating smart machines like robotics. These engineers design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical and electrical systems that are used in computer science, product engineering, aircraft, power generators, cameras, motor vehicles, etc.

What does a Mechatronics Engineer do?

  • A mechatronics engineer develops electronic and mechanical processes.

  • They design, build and install equipment to improve their overall safety and dependability.

  • They partake in all phases of development of a product. Right from the design to testing, mechatronics engineers work on many consumer goods like microwaves, smartphones, cars, as well as industrial products like MRI machines and X-Ray machines.

  • They formulate equipment and work on aspects such as the machine’s software, control systems, actuation, sensing, etc.

What are the skills required?

As a mechatronics engineer, you must have the following skills:

  • Proficiency in physics is a must. You must have a thorough knowledge of kinematics, electricity, magnetism and gravitation.

  • Thorough knowledge of mathematics and concepts like algebra, differential equations, etc.

  • Knowledge of C++ and Python.

  • Knowledge of Matlab.

  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM, Creo, Solidworks, and Catia software.

  • Chandigarh University, Chandigarh.

How to become a Mechatronics engineer in India?

  • Undergraduate (UG) engineering degree, you must have passed 10+2 in the science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) from a recognized board.

  • To get into top engineering colleges such as IITs and NITs, you need to appear for JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and full the required eligibility criteria (performance in the class 12/equivalent qualifying Examination and the Joint Entrance Examination).

  • Independent entrance tests are also held by the various state, central, and private universities which mostly require 50% as the prerequisite to appear for the test. (minimum percentage may vary in case of reserved and girl candidate and college requirement.)

Career scope of Mechatronics Engineers in India

Mechatronics Engineers have a wide scope of options ahead of them.

  • They can work in several industries like aircraft engineering, robotics, automation, nanotechnology, oceanography, transport, automobiles, oil, gas, computer science, biomedical systems, and many more.

  • Mechatronics experts work as technicians and engineers in labs, offices and manufacturing sites.

  • They develop and design automated equipment, maintain machinery, and formulate components and products.

  • Mechatronics engineers can also work as robotics engineers or technicians, software engineers, instrumentation engineers, and electronics or mechanical design engineers.

How much does a Mechatronics Engineer make?

The salary of a mechatronics engineer can vary depending on their qualifications, work experience, and the college and course. Postgraduates in mechatronics are likely to earn more than graduates. However, the starting salary for a mechatronics engineer can range between Rs. 348K and Rs. 831K per year. The average salary can be calculated at Rs. 666k per year. Salaries outside the country can differ based on the place and position.
