Genetic Engineering

What is Genetic Engineering?

  • Genetic Engineering is the direct process of altering the DNA of organisms using biotechnology.

  • It is also known as Genetic Modification and Genetic Manipulation.

  • In this process, the doctor has to test the DNA of plants or any other organism using the micro bioscope and know about their genetic cells.

  • The researchers can also transfer the genes from one plant to another to create something new for the research.

  • They use a set of technologies to change the genetic cells from one plant to another to create a new organism.

  • They can also go with the DNA isolation of cloning, which creates the same plant with the same features.

What are the skills required?

  • Critical thinking

  • Complex problem solving

  • Strong understanding of

  • Ability to use scattering equipment/laboratory equipment

  • Strong knowledge of biochemicals

  • Judgement/decision making

  • Strong knowledge of PCM

Eligibility

Maths is compulsory at 10+2 level if you want to pursue Genetic Engineering. However, you still stand a chance to work in the field of genetics if you can do a graduation/post-graduation in streams like Biochemistry, Microbiology or Molecular Biology.

What are the growth prospects in Genetic Engineering?

  • The student has to complete 10+2 with at least Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to get admission in B.Tech.

  • They have to pass the entrance exams like JEE or GATE for the master admission or PhD admission

  • While doing masters, they can work in a private or government firm on an internship basis. Many companies came for placement in the colleges where a student gets the job

  • Students who have a B.Sc. degree can also pursue with Genetics/Biological Science/Life Science/Biotechnology subjects

  • They also have to pass the government exams for further education.

  • The B.Tech students can begin their careers with private organizations, agriculture sectors, research and development departments, and so on.

What are the salary expectations in Genetic Engineering?

  • The average salary of a qualified genetic engineer is Rs. 3,00,000 per annum.

  • Students can also get government scholarships for further research on genes.
