What is Fisheries Science?

  • Fishery science is a multifaceted and extensive field of study largely aquaculture including breeding, genetics, biotechnology, nutrition, farming, diagnosis of diseases in fishes, other aquatic resources, and the medical treatment of aquatic animals. 

  • The Fish industry also includes fish curing, canning, freezing, value addition, byproducts of fish and their waste utilization, quality assurance and certification, and fisheries microbiology. 

  • It happens to be a very highly skilled and demanding area of study.

  • Since the scope of the subject is very great and accurate it calls for a very high degree of precision and refinements. Extensive and diverse in nature it happens to be a very critical area of work

  • It can be further classified into two major fields: Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and Marine Biology. 

How is it different from Marine ecology?

Marine biology includes marine ecology and it also includes observations at the biochemical, cellular, individual, and community levels as well as the study of marine ecosystems and the biosphere.

Who is eligible?

The degree in Fisheries Science is a science degree, you must have studied science with biology to class 12. The selection process for admission in various universities/colleges is either through university-level exam (CUSAT) or state level entrance examination. Students can also apply for ICAR.
